The Cowboys received horrible news that newly acquired defensive tackle Gerald McCoy suffered a torn quad during preseason camp on Monday. McCoy underwent quad surgery and will be out for the remaining of the season.

The Cowboys then immediately released McCoy by injury waiver. McCoy will still be paid the $3 million signing bonus, and the Cowboys will save about $2.5 million dollars in guarantees, Yahoo sports reports. McCoy along with Dontari Poe were supposed to be the key factors to turn the Cowboys defense around.

McCoy sent out a positive message to his Instagram followers right before his surgery.

McCoy’s injury will not stop him from being apart from the team. As a veteran in the game, McCoy will still be near the team as a mentor to the younger players on the team, CBS Sports reports.

The main challenge the Cowboys will have to figure out is who is going to replace McCoy this season. One option would be Trysten Hill. A second-round draft pick from UCF, Hill may finally see his opportunity after a rocky 2019 season.

Trysten spent three seasons with UCF and totaled 71 tackles and six sacks. Hill did not see a lot of playing time last season. He only played in seven games and only had five tackles and no sacks.

“I really like what he’s done, since really the virtual meeting” said McCarthy about Hill. “He was always looking for extra work, asks a lot of questions, I’ve been very impressed. Only in pads one day, but I think he’s off to a good start in training camp.”

This is Hill’s opportunity to lock his position long term with the Cowboys if he can prove to be a huge part of the Cowboy’s defensive line.

Defensive captain Tyrone Crawford is fully confident that Hill will be able to replace McCoy on the defensive line.

“That guy is an animal” said Crawford about Hill”. A lot of last year was just him growing up and growing into a pro. Now, with this offseason work and his mindset and mentality coming into this thing. I’ve seen him become a pro right before my eyes”

Another pick to replace McCoy is third-round draft pick, Neville Gallimore, from Oklahoma. Gallimore is a very talented defensive tackle as he totaled 147 tackles and 8.5 sacks in four seasons with Oklahoma.

Gallimore is excited to get the opportunity to play for the Cowboys, and the Cowboys hope to get the best out of him after the McCoy loss.

“It’s an exciting time” says Gallimore” “It’s funny how things worked out. People asked me, ‘if you could live any place,’ just for a home or something like that, I said Dallas. I like Dallas a lot. I’ve been out here since January so I got a really good grasp of the area to the point where I was like ‘I’m not looking forward to leaving this place because it’s really grown on me,’ so it was awesome (to be drafted by the Cowboys)”

The Cowboys will still have veterans in their defensive line like defensive ends Tyrone Crawford, DeMarcus Lawrence, Aldon Smith and defensive tackle Dontari Poe. The rookie defenders will have ton of veteran support with them to mentor them throughout the season.
